Carl-Frank Westermann, founder of the Agency for Auditory Brand Development WESOUND, was born in Hamburg and studied business administration, psychology and music. A former member of Fehlfarben, a German band, he is one of the initiators of the master’s program in sound studies at the University of the Arts in Berlin.

From 2000 to 2011, he was a creative director for MetaDesign, a renowned branding agency in Berlin. During his time at MetaDesign, Westermann grew the competence center for sound branding, a field whose importance in strategic brand management had been largely overlooked until his arrival. He advised clients such as Siemens, Lufthansa, Volkswagen, and Allianz. His works have won a number of RED DOT communication design awards, and his acoustic concept for the German Emigration Center in Bremerhaven was the winner of the European Museum Award in 2006.

Westermann is a member of the Ramses Jury and has been the keynote speaker at events like Medianet, TYPO Berlin, the Voice Days in Bonn, the Radio Days in Cologne, the IFA in Berlin, the GEM Forum, and at the Goethe Institute in Shanghai.

 

Best known as the founder of Expansion Team, Alex recently merged his audio branding firm with Eyeball, the design company-turned ad agency led by longtime collaborator Limore Shur. With Expansion Team, Alex was responsible for crafting the sound of many TV networks including CNN International, PBS, Discovery, and Comedy Central, and contributed his expertise to respected brands like jetBlue, Amazon, Target, Verizon and American Express.

An acclaimed recording artist and DJ by night, it was Alex’s early years at Eyeball as an editor/director that led him to launch Expansion Team. Seeing a growing need for authentic music in the ad world, he assembled a roster of recording artists, DJs, and Grammy-winning songwriters and became a pioneer in the audio branding field. By joining forces with Eyeball once again, he continues his vision for more engaging and effective brand building.

 

Patrick Langeslag studied business admin­istration at the University of Antwerp and graduated with a major in international economics. In 2001, he founded the audio consulting group together with Wilbert Hirsch. As senior partner strategy, he advises major companies in acoustic branding and corporate identity. Patrick Langeslag serves as an external lecturer for audio branding at several universities. He has been a member of the New York Academy of Science since 2003.

 

Daniel M. Jackson began his sonic branding career at Publicis in 1996 and founded the UK’s first agency, Sonicbrand, in 1999. In 2003, he wrote An Introduction to Sonic Branding (MacMillan) the world’s first book on the subject. He has consulted on more than 100 significant sonic branding projects in all categories.

His current agency, CORD Worldwide, has established offices in London and New York from which it services brands and agencies seeking to develop creative and commercial strategies in music and sound. He is currently writing his second book – on the relationship between music and brands – in collaboration with fellow ABA acolyte, Richard Jankovich.

 

Prof. Florian Käppler is a composer and the founder of KLANGERFINDER GmbH & Co KG, Stuttgart’s studio for audio communication. KLANGERFINDER creates and realises acoustic projects in the contrasting areas between brands and music, media and space, art and business and science and technology.

Prof. Käppler is a member of the Art Director’s Club, Germany and co-founder of the interdisciplinary study course, music design at the Staatliche Hochschule für Musik, Trossingen and Furtwangen University. On 1st October 2011, Prof. Käppler was appointed Head of the audiodesign department of the Hochschule der populären Künste in Berlin (HdpK -University of Applied Sciences). His sound design projects have gained international awards including Red Dot Awards, ADC Nails, the Adolf-Grimme Preis and the Berlin International Film Festival’s golden bear.

His most outstanding work includes the complete sound recording for the German Pavilion at the world fair, Expo 2010 in Shanghai, an all-embracing corporate sound project for the AUDI brand and the spatial sound presentation for the Alpine Sensation at a height of 3,400 metres on the Jungfraujoch in the Bernese Alps. Currently, Prof. Florian Käppler is working with his studio, KLANGERFINDER GmbH & Co KG, on the complete sound recording for the new Porsche Pavilion in the automotive town of Wolfsburg.

 

Born in 1956 in Sheffield, UK. After leaving school worked in computers for 3 years, in 1978 formed The Human League. Formed production company/label British Electric Foundation in 1980 and formed Heaven 17 the same year. Martyn has written, performed and produced two Human League, two BEF and nine Heaven 17 albums. As record producer and artist has featured on recordings totaling over 50 million sales worldwide – producing Tina Turner, Terence Trent D’Arby, Chaka Khan, Erasure, Marc Almond and Mavis Staples, etc.

Founded Illustrious Co. Ltd. with Vince Clarke in 2000 to exploit the creative and commercial possibilities of their unique three-dimensional sound technology in collaboration with fine artists, the performing arts and corporate clients around the world. Clients include: BP, Ogilvy, The British Council, The Science Museum, The Royal Ballet, Amnesty International, The V&A Museum, Mute Records, BBC TV, the Royal Observatory Greenwich, BAFTA , Museum Of London. Tate Britain, Red Bull Music Academy, City Of Westminster Council, etc.

Martyn produces and presents a series of events entitled ‘Future Of Sound’ (21 so far) in UK and around the world and has created sonic architectural works at the British Pavilion at the Venice Architectural Biennale in 2006 amongst many others. He also lectures extensively on music production, technology, and creativity at universities and colleges across the world and he is Head of Sonic Experience and co-founder of  sound branding agency – SonicID.
