Abstract

A major renovation of the central square in Uppsala, Sweden, aimed to transform it from a traffic junction into a human-centric meeting place. By mitigating noise and integrating cyclic sound design, the square’s identity as a welcoming cultural hub is enriched. This innovative approach offers a blueprint for shaping urban soundscapes worldwide.

Description

Just as in many other cities, Uppsala’s auditory landscape is primarily dominated by motor traffic, a trend persisting for nearly a century. However, noise pollution need not define the city’s soundscape. During an extensive renovation of the central square, known as “Stora Torget,” considerable attention was given to its acoustic environment. Over the years, the square has undergone numerous transformations, serving diverse roles in the city’s life. The renovation aimed to shift the square from a dreary bus terminal into a lively and dynamic meeting place. Various measures were implemented to achieve this goal, with particular emphasis placed on enhancing the sound environment.

By mitigating noise levels and allowing space for alternative sounds to emerge, the overall auditory experience of the square could be significantly improved. This initiative also inspired the incorporation of positive auditory experiences into the location. We have curated a range of sound experiences delivered through speakers seamlessly integrated into the square’s lighting system. These sounds are programmed to occur at different intervals throughout the week and year. Here are some examples:

• “Uppsala Wakes Up” – A cheerful and atmospheric composition ending with a rooster crowing welcoming the morning in Uppsala, played daily at 7:00 AM.

• “Uppsala Good Night” – On Friday and Saturday nights from 1:00 AM to 1:30 AM, selected nocturnes by Chopin are played, aiming to calm the atmosphere during potentially chaotic moments on the square.

• “The Changing of Seasons” – Celebrated during the summer and winter solstices, as well as the spring and autumn equinoxes, with Vivaldi’s corresponding Seasons played at regular intervals.

• “Walpurgis Night” – A cherished tradition in Uppsala attracting visitors from all over the country. One of the highlights is the student raft race in the Fyris River, just a block away from Stora Torget. Thousands of visitors pass through the square this morning, during which Händel’s Water Music is played. Händel wrote Water Music in 1717 at the request of King George I of Britain, to be performed on barges on the River Thames. Could there be a better piece to accompany the rafts racing in the Fyris River?

• “National Day of Archeology” – Visitors can experience a soundscape reminiscent of medieval times at the square, made in collaboration with The County Museum for Uppsala County.

• “New Year’s Eve” – At midnight, ABBA’s “Happy New Year” fills the square with festive cheer.

• “Seasonal Soundscapes” – Throughout the year, visitors can enjoy the sounds of birds native to the region and season, enriching the square’s ambiance.

These initiatives not only enhance the square’s atmosphere but also contribute to its identity as a cultural hub. They celebrate Uppsala’s traditions and heritage while providing a unique and memorable experience for visitors and locals alike.
