Healing Soundscape: generative processes in sound installations for hospital waiting areas

Abstract
Since the fall of 2015, members of the Hamburg University of Music and Drama are conducting a project aiming at improving the well-being of patients in hospital waiting areas via interactive sound installations. After an evaluation of the acoustic environment pursued by the members of the institute of music therapy, students of the master program in multimedia composition set out to create a software consisting of a probabilistic generative engine and a periphery for sensor input and sound spatialization of sonic events. In the context of this workshop we will present the theoretical and practical foundations for the the design of such a Healing Soundscape.
Georg Hajdu
Georg Hajdu is a composer and professor of multimedia composition at the Hamburg University of Music and Drama (HfMT). After studies of biology and composition in Germany and USA, he completed his doctoral studies at the University of California, Berkeley with the multimedia opera Der Sprung – Beschreibung einer Oper. He is an internationally renowned expert for microtonal music, networked music performance as well as real-time composition and notation. He conducted a number of national and international research projects and was involved in the installation of the wave-field synthesis system at the HfMT. Besides his teaching duties, he develops software for the notation of unusual music and for networked performance.
